you can't.

remove 1 Blood parrot, 1 jack dempsy, 1 common pleco, and add some more malawis. Or remove the malawis and be prepared to trade the pleco in in 8 months.

i was gunna say malawi cichlids need to be in a kind of saltwater right? i love how they look but ive heard they also take alot of upkeep to help them stay healthy and colorful.

could you still get a pic of the dempsey?

Malawis dont need to be in saltwater. Some people dose salt in their Cichlid tanks, but it is quite controversial whether or not you should actually do it. I myself have never dosed my malawis or tangs. with salt. That is just me.

Cichlid or rift lake salts are different from aquarium salt, cichlid salts are made to buffer your water (hardness, alkalinity, etc..) regular salt alone won't do that.

Looks very nice! As already stated really shouldn't mix those types of cichlids. But I love your tank!!

ive had this setup for about a year, i know you are "supposed" to do it but that does not give you reason to be so rude about it.

You can mix African and new world cichlids and I've seen it done many times. You just have to be smart about it. Size and aggression are the key factors and peacocks and many Africans aren't going to go well with a Dempsey or other big fish. I keep mine separated, but I know a lot of people, including some fish stores, who don't.

My polleni is in with my new worlds. What am I supposed to do, put it an exclusive tank because its from Madagascar and bigger than most Africans? It certainly makes more sense to have it there than in with my peacocks. When I first started I knew I wanted a polleni and first planned to put it in my African tank based on what I read. You just have to learn as you go. Do your own research and pay attention to how tanks are set up at your lfs.

Over time a Dempsey in a 50 gallon with 10 other cichlids, regardless of where they're from, isn't going to work. That's just too many fish. That doesn't mean you have to race out the door first thing tomorrow finding new homes for all of them.

i am aware that the blood parrot and the dempsy are not going to stop growing anytime soon. I will plan when that happens but its not going to be anytime soon

The 'purist's' would tend to disagree w/ mixing cichlids that have vastly different water requirements. One group or the other is sure not to thrive in the long run. That being said, if it's working for ya, keep doing what you're doing & observe regularly. Be advised that 'blue lobster' ($$) is likely to go missing as time progresses. My 'O' & 'JD' go thru 2 or 3 a month w/ ease. Good luck, "T"

No, not saltwater. They don't take anymore upkeep than any other type of fish. Just use proper filtration, do lots of water changes and follow their diets. But because of different water conditions and their behaviors I wouldn't mix malawi and SA/CA. Not to mention that is an awful lot for that tank. The JD and Blood Parrot would get quite large and malawi's are very territorial.
