So I was given some java moss and a piece of driftwood recently; thought I would add it to my tank to see how things go.

Using some fishing line I tied it to the piece of wood and into the tank it went. A day later, part of it had broken off and had attached itself to my filter (going to buy a pre filter cover this wkend). Then every time I do a water change, it seems like it releases a bunch of crap into my water.

I took out the driftwood and the moss and have tied it more tightly now to the log. Is there something I'm doing wrong? How do most folks attach it?

Well, bits of plants do get stuck to the filter inlet, which is why some people wrap the inlet in foam. My filter used to get (and still gets) some bits of hornwort stuck to it, but its easy enough to pick it off and as long as your filter flow is not unduly affected, it will do no harm. After the plants get established, fewer bits fall off - it's almost all dead stuff or broken leaves that float around the tank like that - inevitable with a newly planted tank. I just leave my java moss loose in the tank - it has found a place with little current and just sits there, which is cool, and seems to be healthy and growing. You can only re-tie it with fishing line, as you are doing. It doesn't sound like you are doing anything wrong at all.
