All I can say is it doesn't look anything like any of the thousands of young convicts I've raised...
It does have the green terror look to it. What other fish are in the tank?

frameshift....first i want to thank you very very much...i dont know much about computer stuff....so thank you so much....
second, i have one convict and one green terror, two pleco, one irredecent shark, one leporanus, and one tetra that the kids brought home from school about two years ago. thats it. i have had all these fish for well over two years...as i was cleaning the tank one day, he popped out of nowhere...and so i was wondering where did he come from....he does look more like the terror i thought as well. at one time i did have two green terrors...could he be the only survivor of their fry? from over a year ago? any input would be appreciated...im just confused...but thank you for putting those pics up...that was super nice...
How big is the fish right now?

My guess is yes that is a hybrid of a your GT and your convict. Also that your GT is female and your Convict is male, hence the similar size. My GT looks much different than yours. I am interested to see how the hybrids markings or if it will continue to look bland. If your GT was male he would be MUCH larger than the convict.

He definately has green terror in him. the lack of dots also suggests some other genes. Hence the convict.
What size is he?
This will help to devine when he was born. Becaue physicalls he has to be GT. He is either GT-Gt or GT-Convict per your description of yuor tank.
Can you get a sideways pic so we can better see the lack of spots and/or the dominate vertical bars of the convict on him.

yes i will try that...he is about 2 inches now. still much a baby. and he does have the stripes like the convict. thats why i got so confused...his face has markings like my green terror, but at the same time he has stripes...i will continue to try to get other pics up of him...thanks guys.

IMO it looks like a green terror convict, bkuz thats what is in the tank currently and you can see the iridescent sheen to some of the scales espicially between his mouth and his eyes you can really make out the green dots. and from the pic from the side you can see some bars in the scales that hint convict. so i conclude that it is GT/convict hybrid.

It looks like a pure Green Terror to me. A female GT often has two white stripes on the body. Perhaps you forget that ther is another GT. I doubt that Convict can cross breed with a GT because GT is a SA species remotely related to any CA species. If indeed it is a Convict GT hybrid, then Convict has set the record for successfully cross breeding with Dampsey, Salvini, Red Devel, Blood Parrot, Jaquar, Texas . . . and here the first cross between SA and CA. Convict should be crowned the Playboy of American cichlids.

If I am not mistaken I believe that the con and the GT were the only large cichlids in this tank, correct? Also I have seen several Green Terrors and raised a 1" juvenile myself. I go to LFS all the time and look at cichlids. I have never seen a grey striped with green stripes on its face Green Terror, male or female. IMHO if this fish was a full blooded Green Terror, it would actually be green not grey. The main reason I can identify it as being a hybrid are the presence of the verticle stripes common in convicts and then then black spot in the middle of the abdomen common in all aequidens rivulatus. I hope he looks more attractive later on in life. :|
This little fellow is too young to be sure what breed anyway. We were all stating opinion here just based on what we saw.
Good luck with your new found fish :D

i want to thank you guys...i read a lot of what you guys say in other threads...it took me a while to post this because i didnt want to sound stupid, not knowing but all the same questions that you guys have i have too. my green terror and my convict are the biggest in the tank. at one time i had two green terrors, but they did not have fry. so my only conclusion, is that the green terror and the convict did. he is small though. but all of you guys know so much about different types of fish and you have certainly helped me out a lot. and dave, i too hope he is a little more attractive. but all in all he is part of some ones family, might as well make it mine..hehe.;) i will learn as much as i can and post when he gets older so that you can see him through stages...seriously though, i really do appreciate all your help. even with posting my pics for me...i will learn though..i promise.:D

I'm wondering what the sex of my fish are in the 55gal...they are getting closer to breeding age and things might get a little weird. Almost tempted to try to breed a monster... Convict X Texas = COTEX heheh People have done in the past and the resulting fry must have had one hell of an attitude!
PS No, I'm not going to try for hybrids.

I always wondered what a con and GT mix would look like since my female con was always trying to come on to my male GT. His temperment is if he cant eat it then he doesnt care about it. That and if he is swimming one way and you are in the way you better move. That describes him to a T. Granted if a little baby popped up in my tank and made it to 2"s all on his own by without my help, Then I would think that it would have a right to be in my family as well. I would keep him. I also know that pictures dont always translate what a fish can look like. I only have a few pics of my fish that I took before my camera messed up and none of them ever did him justice. He is much larger now than he was when I took these.

Looks like a small female GT to me.
Tiger15

I agree. It's a female GT. There have never been a confirmed cross betsween a CA and a SA cichlid. Genetically, CA and SA are too far apart to be able to cross successfully.

well im not sure of the statistics, but when he gets a bit older i can better judge him. it really doesnt matter what he is really. he is the first born in the tank. and only. so he is a keeper anyway. everyone has wonderful advice for me. i really appreciate it so much...i will keep you posted....

I am still learning every day. Convict is probably the most promiscuous fish in the world The other day I browsed a LFS and saw a pair of pink convict jealously guarding fry. The male is a tiny 1.25 inch fish and the female is less than an inch.
