I am not sure what is wrong with my snail. Last week we had an ammonia spike in our ten gallon and we lost three fish two cory's and our betta. Well now I am afraid we are about to loose our snail. All we have left in the ten gallon is three cory's and the snail. We had to put some medicine in for fin rot as well. For the last two days the snail has been floating on the top and getting pushed around by the filter. I haven't seen him moving about the tank for over two days. I am still new at this and I don't know what could be wrong with the snail. We did a water change yesterday and checked the water parameters. The ammonia is about 0 and the nitrite is high .... we have the strips and they are kind of hard to read but it said it was in the danger level. The nitrate was at 10ppm sorry if this isn't very helpful but as I said I am still new at this.

Unfortunately, apple snails are very sensitive to spikes in ammonia and nitrite. Your best chance is to do several large water changes to dilute the water. Also what kind of medication are you using to treat the tank? Snails and inverts in general are not tolerant of a majority of the meds commonly used. Do you have another tank/vessel you could move teh snail to with some temp. matched dechlorinated water?

I'm not at home so unfortunately I don't remember the name. It is made my api I think it is a yellowish powder for fin rot gill disease and pop eye. I have a 2.5 gal that we just got that maybe I could put him in for a few days. It has not other fish in it yet. Yesterday we did about an 80% water change. How often should we do this?

I would do water changes until the nitrite and ammonia are reading as low as possible, preferably 0. You may consider investing in a liquid test kit as their results are much more accurate. Since you have the 2.5 g, definately move the snail over. Check it frequently to see if its responsive (gently touch the trap door to see if it pulls back). If he starts to get stinky, its unfortunately too late. In the future, its always best to remove inverts from a tank when treating with meds if at all possible. Good luck and I hope he makes it for you.

Thank you, I will definitely do that as soon as I get home. I hope I can save him, my daughter calls him shelly hehe and I don't want to loose it.

Well I have him in a 2.5 gal by himself at the moment. He is still floating at the top and not eating. I do see him stick out his syphin on occasion so I know he is still alive ... I hope he pulls through this.

Keep a very close eye on your water parameters and remove any uneaten food to prevent a spike in this tank as well. I am pulling for Shelly to make it!

I'm, so happy. When I got home today I checked in on Shelly and he was crawling around the tank! It also looks like he ate some of the food that I put in for him. I am going to do a water change here in a few but I am just so happy that he is pulling through.
