Water Conditioners

I'm just curious as to what everyone's preferred water conditioner/dechlorinator is and why do you like it?

I use Jungle Insto Chlor. The reason I like it, is I can measure up small amounts (1 drop per 2 Liters). I like ones that measure in drops as opposed to teaspoons, etc. Dividing those into smaller amounts drives me crazy.

I know I will have to switch to something else in a year or so. We have chlorine but the new water treatment plant will be using chloramine.

What upsets me is that nowhere in all their information (pamphlet, site) do they mention anything about how that will affect aquariums. I think there will be a lot of unknowledgeable aquarists who will be caught when the switch is made.

I use Wardley's dechlorinator. It was the one available from WalMart when I went in and seems to work fine. Plus it is cheap and uses drops instead of capfuls.

Our water supply uses chloramines. For water that's aged before use (home), I use plain sodium thiosulfate from Fishy Farmacy. For tanks that take tap water directly (office) I use Amquel, or occasionally Prime.

I use Prime, it seems to work well and have everything covered. It detoxifies ammonia and nitries and it's probably the reason I got through my tank's cycle without losing any fish.

No offense but Instant Chlor does remove chlorine and chloramine. :confused:

For conditioners, I use Jungle's A.C.E. or Kordon's AmQuel . :cool:

We use Kent's R/O Right and Discus Essential... These are conditioners, the plant ferts are a different matter.

Insto Chlor removes chlorine and breaks the chloramine bond, but it does not remove the ammonia - I would then have to add another Jungle product to remove ammonia. Simpler to use one thing, like Prime, or the A.C.E that you use (but I haven't seen the ACE here).

Correction: Instant Chlor breaks the chlorine-ammonia bond, but does nothing for the ammonia released, making it fully available to damage your fish unless you use another product to capture/neutralize the ammonia.

The "59mL" A.C.E. are available at Walmarts in Ontario. Do Wally's in MB carry them ?

Nope, Wal-Mart is where I got what I have. There were only 2 conditioners at the store close to home and the other one (forget name) was a "capful" measuring one, so it was promptly disregarded.

The info that Jungle gives on the Insto Chlor is somewhat misleading and confusing. It says that it removes chlorine and chloramine. Telling you that is breaks the chloramine bond and making the water safe for the fish instantly, but then it goes and tells you in the details that you will need to use another product to take care of the released ammonia. If someone did not bother to read as far as the details and proceeded to use only this product they would be in a bit of trouble with regards to their water. Jungle Labs should really restate the wording on the packaging of this product.

I use Prime because it goes a long way and is an all in one water conditioner, it removes, binds and neutralizes several things.

I prefer AmQuel, but I occasionally use SeaChem or whatever's on sale.

I use Aquarium Pharmacueticals StressCoat. It just happened to be on sale when I bought it. I normally just buy whatever is on sale. I always buy the gallon size jugs since I have 9 tanks that I maintain. The gallon jugs tend to last a long time.
