I bought 6 convicts to try and get a breeding pair. I noticed today that they were all chasing each other around the tank and I was wondering how I could tell when a pair developed. I tried, unsuccessfuly, to mate 4 female guppies and a male (the 2 males i had kept dying for some reaosn, one of them swum under a plant and got stuck) and am now trying convicts.

When a pair does develop, will they try to defend one corner or section of the tank against the others or will they always be swiming next to each other.

How long does it take to get a pair?

IT is really easy to tell them apart the males get long pointy fins and the females have rounded fins.... most likely they will decide to torture and kill the other fishmates so you should get a piece of plastic and separate them off or move the other ones, they will pair up really fast if you have a male and a female the male will start moving rocks to get a house and then he will get a girl

i have sand substrate with live plants (i know they are going to get destroyed but i like them for now) so there arent any rocks. and i can tell the diff right now, the females all have orange spots on their stomachs and are about 2" long. it just doesnt seem like any of the males are getting enough time to start doing anything except getting chased around by the females

are the females larger than the males?
how many females are there and how many males?
Are they doing " the dance "?

yeah i just got a male and a female a couple of weeks ago and they paired up right away and had fry in a matter of a week or so

what size tank is this? your signature says that you already gave a pair in a 29 - is that right? if you have 6 of them in there right now, they are probably too busy fighting and defending territory to actually pair up and lay eggs yet. lots of stress. what do you plan to do with the 'extras' once you get a pair?

i plan on getting rid of the 4 extra. the lfs told me that to definitally get a pair i should get 6. i still have the reciept and i plan on returning them or giving the extras away. i was a little preemptive with the sig

side note, i originally only got 2 because of the territory issue, but the female was chasing the male into the corner under one of the filters and he wasnt getting out of that area.

i found a pair within 18 hours of putting the 4 extra chichlids in the tank. i returned the other 4 and now i have a pair that are doing everything together. horray!
