I currently have eco complete as my substrate for my planted tank and plan to add some onyx sand. Does Onyx Sand need any rinsing since Eco complete doesn't?

My tank right now has lots of plants which has grown over the last two weeks as well as live inhabitants (2 rams, 7 Rummy noses, 2 Cory)? How should I put in the onyx sand without disturbing any inhabitants currently in the tank? Should I take the fish out and put the sand in? Whats the best recommended way to add more substrate to my current substrate?

I rinsed it quite a bit when I added it to my tank. I rinsed each 7kg bag in a 6g pail ten times. It was completely dust free at that point.

I will be honest, I just poor it in unless I am using a really dirty substrate. I have poored in Tahitian moon sand several times with little to no problems. It clouds a little, but settles quickly.

As far as bothering your inhabitants, most come from areas that naturally have heavy amounts of suspended soil particles from time to time, so I wouldn't think they would be very bothered.

If you dump it in, you would probably want to turn off your filter so you don't suck any into it. Could damage the impellar if it got to it.

that is true. Plus, I find it settles better with the filters off.
