Hey, I've been thinking about my stocking lately and am thinking about my 29, my 2 10s and my "soon to be ready for fish" 55.

stocking is as follows:
55
empty!

29 1 biowheel mini + 1 biowheel 100 (minus the biowheel) = rated 200 gph
moderate - heavy planting
12 neon tetras
2 male guppies
2 bamboo shrimp
6 ghost and cherry shrimp (combined total)

10
3 female guppies
3 white clouds (had 5. returned 1 because of a tail deformity only to find they were out of stock, and one disappeared during a WC :lipssealedsmilie:)
some fry guppy fry that i can't seem to net

10 #2
guppy fry

I was thinking of maybe getting some common hatchet fish for the 29 (2 at most) but worry about too much stocking.

feedback?

If you go with Hatchets, I'd suggest at least 6. Stock slowly, watch your water parameters, and keep an eye on the fish. Sound like cool tanks! :)

for some reason I was thinking that the common was okay in smaller numbers..

I think I just misread something at one point.

do i have room in the 29 for all those hatchets?

step 1
make sure the LFS stocks common hatchets, not silver ones
Step 2
tank cover!
Step 3
world domination?

thanks hook! they're fun tanks, but the 55 is by far, the most exciting :(
totally need to get that thing going.

All hatchets are schoolers and 4-6 would be minimum for them to feel comfy. By "Common" do you mean marbled? They seem to be the most regularly stocked hatchet. I hate common names, but at the same time suck with Latin. lol

I think you have room. It depends on your filtration for the most part. I'd add 2 or 3 and keep track of your water readings. Then add the remainder. Definitely cover the tank! World domination is mine. ;)

An empty 55... someone call the fish cops!

mk is not allowed to read up on fish after midnight anymore.

it leads to too many mistakes.

i'll read up in the morming.

thanks!

I knew I didn't make it up:
The Common Hatchetfish are often sold as a Silver Hatchetfish, which is a misnomer though a common mistake. The actual Silver Hatchetfish is another species, Thoracocharax securis. The confusion comes from them being very similar. The biggest difference is that the true Silver Hatchetfish grow much larger, getting up to 3 1/2" (9.1 cm) which is a full inch longer than the Common Hatchetfish. Another difference is that the Silver Hatchetfish does not have the pronounced black horizontal line seen on the Common Hatchetfish.

Stick with Marbleds or Mathae. They stay smaller. There is no such thing as a "Common Hatchetfish".

Any one else?

Will hatchets try to jump into uncovered lights? I imagine they will, but figured i'd ask as I've got some work ahead of me.

World domination is mine.
This is my market! LOL

The hatchets are ready jumpers, I would imagine if space is left, they would take advanatage of that. Sounds like a nice stocking plan. I always recommend qt any new fish before addition for a month of health especially since you have inverts. Inverts are often intolerant of alot of hte meds available for treatment of common diseases and its cheaper to treat a small tank than your display and also insures that you don't infect your established stock.

I do have what was a QT tank, it's another 10g that is currently growing out some plants.

I could put 2-3 in there for QT.. plus, it's got a cover!
