Hi, I was at my LFS today and they had these shrimp. I have never heard of red japonica shrimp, so I came home and tried to look them up and can't find anything. All that comes up is the regular japonica shrimp. They were very cool looking. They looked like cherry shrimp just bigger. Anyone ever seen these?

1st- sometimes an LFS will give wierd names to inverts or fish to make them sound rarer and more expensive than they really are. this is also why common names are not the best.

japonica shrimp are also known as Amano shrimp. they are alot like cherries, but are not red. by chance, do you have any pics of the shrimp?

It might just be a regular amano shrimp with a different food source/coloring...

I have an amano shrimp with a very maroonish/red color. His (or her) color is red but not as bright red as a female cherry but rather dark red. I'm not really sure what causes this, but in any case, your LFS probably just made that name up for a different colored amano. I've never heard of a "Red Cherry Japonica" before.

My amano shrimp gradually shift from blue through to browny maroon hitting green and yellow in between and back. I'm not sure why.

I didn't take a pic, although I should have. They were definetely a bright red color and bigger than cherry shrimp. I thought it was very weird, i'm sure they did something to the amano's to get that color.

Yes Picture please.. That's definitely a description I've never heard before and I manage a pretty big LFS
