A few weeks ago I had a sudden ammonia spike in one of my established tanks (nothing dead, religious weekly water changes). The fish appeared to be okay (due to very low pH, ammonia was in the form of ammonium), but after a while, I decided to move all of the fish to a different (established) tank. I’m not sure what the cause was but in the end, the tank basically re-cycled.
I moved the fish back and the readings have been great ever since. However, a week ago one of my dear dwarf Gourami’s suddenly exhibited pop-eye. He also had a small abrasion on the top of his head and a little bit of what looked like fin rot. I’ve not seen anyone harassing him, and I’m wondering his immune system took a hit as a result of the stress from the move and change in water conditions. I treated him with tetracycline last week (5 day course) and the pop-eye got a lot better (still not completely back to normal, though).
I’ve been watching him closely and it looks like the fin rot is getting worse. This morning I noticed that one of his pectoral fins looks like it is completely atrophied and the poor thing is just hanging out in the corner now (but still eating). I decided to try a course of Marcyn Two (minocycline) as it says it treats fin rot and pop-eye, but I’d appreciate any advice regarding next steps. The other two dwarf Gourami’s and in that tank are fine. :(
