View Full Version : Good dithers for 29 gallon convict tank.
I have a pair of cons in a 29g and I want some action from the parents when they are breeding. I don't plan to raise the fry. I actually am tired of the fry lol. I love seeing them breed, but the fry have become nothing short of a nuissance. I have to many to feed to my other cichlids so I was kinda thinking of what I could put in with them that would be fast enough to evade a male convict attack. Any ideas? I was thinking serpae tetras. I already have 5 zebra danios in there, but I want 1 more shoal of 6 tetras or something of that nature.

I have a grouping of Giant Danios in with mine, besides being ugly they do their job.

giant danios yes are a good addition to any tank with aggressive fish, they are cheap, fast and not that bad looking, mine are very silver and blue quite nice specimens.

Austrailan rainbow fish is what I have in my 29g with a firemouth.
They get about the same lenght as giant danios and have a metallic sheen to them when they mature.

the only problem with the rainbows, is that they can get expensive, like probably 10 times what i paid for my giant danios, i paid $.99 each and they were like 3" already. and the rainbows, at least in my area start at 10 a piece at about 2". the rainbows are just not very economical in my opinion, even tho they do look nicer than giant danios, i just dont think they are 10 times nicer.

If you want the best of both worlds, you need to get a larger tank.
With more room to run away, the target fish in question will survive much longer (in fact, they may not die at all). At that point, the investment in the rainbows will not look like such a bad idea.
Think about it. A 55 or 75 gallon tank would suit your purposes, and would virtually eliminate the need for replacing your target fish. Somewhere in there you would break even on the $$$.

Hmm I live in australia and I've never actually looked at the price of the rainbow fish, I've most likely have just forgot. I'm not really keen on buying them as My cousin can catch them as he lives up on the northcoast of queensland. They are great looking fish and can get some really nice colouration on there dorsal and anal fin. But I'm guessing we pay as much as you do on them. Except that your $10 is more like our $20.
