Malaysian trumpet snails should be able to do it...anything else that I could suitably keep in a dark sump with no plants/decoration?

Don't even think of getting clams. While I have never tried them, I have already been told by a few people I know that keeping clams alive requires a lot of efforts. They tend to die in a few weeks prior to introduction and will strictly live on algae alone.

I'd rather you go with MTS. I can't remember at the moment what else would do the same job as they do.

Isn't that kind of the opposite of an answer to the question?

Melanoides and Tarebia can dig quite deep into the sand. Trapdoors, Spixis, Pearl shrimp and some Nerites can dig and kick up the sand a bit, but aren't too effective.

Unless they can find their way through a foam filter and back up the return(through the pump impeller no less) into the main tank, I probably don't have to worry about infestation. The more the merrier; If they have the resources to produce, I want more. If not, I want less.

Sounds like MTS are the best bet. Probably about 4-6" of sand. Isolated from the rest of the tank's inhabitants.
