View Full Version : Why do all the critters go to the top at night?

Hi,
IN the morning, I find many of my snails near to the top of the tank. Why do they do this? This morning my peppermint shrimp and a crab had also found their way up there. Is something wrong?
My water params are up and down right now as the tank is trying to work its way through a massive, though healthy addition of LR to the tank. The ammonia gets near to 1ppm and then I do WC to bring back down. Does this have anything to do with inverts behaviors? Even the fish was up there this am???
Thanks!

No idea, mine are never at the top unless that's their spot they were in earlier in the day.
It could have something to do with params. i would have cured the rock on my own and slowly added it to the tank to make sure I didn't have any issues there.

My tomato swims to the top for the first 2 nights until he is sure the tank is safe.
May be they fear or see something monsterous coming out in the dark of night. Seriously.

Both ideas make sense. Right now I'm doing WCes to keep the ammonia down below 1 as the tank gets it's legs back under it...could be related. Also, with several new invert additions, they could be navigating the terrain to find their "spot". The snails are much more active at night...wonder if the lights are unpleasant for them so they do their climbing once they are off?

I hear you. This is going much faster than I anticipated but I'm going with it! I'm trying out a different method of adding rock with lots of life on it and trying to maintain that life rather than letting it die off and big ammonia spikes. It's definitely more work up front (WCes) but I'm hoping it will mean more life and more diverse life in the end. I'll keep ya posted! The rates are already dropping after 2 days of 2X daily 20% WC...I really hope it works! My husband and I keep going to the tank..."is everything still okay? Is it okay? Is it okay?"
