One of the tanks I have has a white layer of minerals (I think) on the sides. The tank's been dry for about 8-9 months now and being used as a snake cage. Any one know of something that would clean this stuff off that doesn't hurt reptiles or small rodents?

Sounds like calcium/lime deposits. You can use lemon juice to help remove it. There might be better things you can use out there too.

Hard water stains can be removed with hot water and a razorblade, or vinegar helps too.

Might try the vinegar thing, it's been driving me nuts since I got the tank. Not complaining that much though, free 55 gallon tank with stand for free.

A glass scraper is your best bet, but anything acidic will help. Vinegar and lemon juice are good; if the minerals are extremely resistant you can use muriatic acid from the pool supply store (this is powerful stuff; you'll need gloves, goggles, ventilation, and a place away from easily damaged flooring). I have heard that hydrogen peroxide can help loosen deposits as well.

I agree with the previous posts. I live in Kentucky, we have very hard water here. We always just use Vinegar and a paper towel, and it works just fine. I've never owned snakes though, so I don't really know if it will affect them. It doesn't seem to affect the fish as long as we let it dissipate before putting water in.

I've never had a snake before, but I don't think it would hurt to try and see if it works. But I'm not sticking my hand in the tank to try just yet. A 6ft snake vs. my hand doesn't sound good and she's getting ready to shed.
