I am buying 5, 10 gallon tank for my breeding fish and temporary placements for fishes incase injury, sickness, or just cleaning their tank. I was wondering what items I would need for these tanks. And I talking about, filter, substrate, and such on.

I basically need help with the fitration unit. I using the color assorted gravel, but I don't know how to set up the filtration, mechanical biological and chemical filters. Also I'm planning on having cories in my fish tank, but I hear that gravel breaks their barbell, so what substrate should I use?

Cories will do fine with gravel as long as it is the smallest gravel you can get and is very rounded without any sharp edges. Generally that small colourful gravel you get at the petstore will be okay.

For the 10 gallon tank an AC Mini will be a good choice for a filter. It might be okay on the 5 gallon as well. It is a filter that hangs on the back of the tank and it easy to clean.

You will also need a heater in each tank.

I have a 10 gallon aquarium with a hagen aqua clear mini(this uses all 3 methods, mechanical, biological and chemical) that works very well. It is easy to set up and to clean. I also have a "hang on to the aquarium", 50 watt heater also made by hagen. My aquarium's hood has a floresent light fixture to it, which is a plus because it doesnt heat up the water temp in the tank, is energy effiecent and is great for live plants. Good Luck,
