Hello all,

I am making a DIY rubbermaid or sterlite sump for a future, planted 55 gallon tank.

I was wondering what's a good turnover rate for a planted freshwater tank.

I'm more familiar with the 35-45x turnover rate required for saltwater tanks but was wondering what a good number is for freshwater planted tanks.

Thanks a lot,

10 is the best that I've seen without any adverse effects to the current, and the fishes ability to handle it.
i've gone over that and had no ill effects, i'd recommend that you shoot for at least 10x turnover because you've got a very tall tank that is going to make it hard to keep dead spots down, perhaps aim for 5x going through the sump and then hide a couple small powerheads in the plants.

ok.

I plan on having a DIY wet/dry. this will be a 55G if I didn't mention that already by the way.

My plan was to have one split in the return nozzle to reduce the amount of flow coming out of one power head.

I would also hide two or three low-flow power heads towards the bottom back of the tank to make sure all areas of the are circulating properly
