has anyone resealed a glass tank recently. I have a 100 gallon that's been empty for 8 yrs. it was on a particle board stand that showed signs of leaks. Wondering If i should remove the old silicone and apply new one. any tips or suggestions would be helpful:rolleyes:

We recently resiliconed a 77gal tank.

We started by using a razorblade to remove the old silicone. This took awhile. We didn't break any of the seals that actually hold the 4 pieces of glass together; we only scraped the silicone from the inside surfaces.

Next, clean the inside of the tank with vinegar. Get rid of all the little bits of silicone!

Use painters' tape to tape the inside of the tank. I left about a 1/4 inch margin on either side of each joint. Then, apply aquarium safe silicone one joint at a time. Dip your finger in water and run it along the silicone to smooth it out and make sure it's pressed right to the glass. It helps if you have one person doing the siliconing, and another person smoothing it out.

After all the joints are done, quickly remove the tape. You should be left with very clean siliconed joints. Let it dry according to the directions on the silicone tube.

Good luck!

Do you just take off the ones that need redoing?
(hijack in progress)...
I have a 20 long that needs to be resealed in one corner (had hamsters in it) Do I need to remove all of the silicone on the inside?

chances are it would be a good idea, because the hamster's may have done more damage than you can easily see.....

but there really shouldn't be a problem with just redoing one joint (or however many).

While we redid our 77gal we also redid a 30gal.....just for the hell of it...

It was TOTALLY worth it because it looks wayyyyy nicer now.
The secret is all in the masking tape!! :)
