I've had this filter for a while now - bout a year and bout a month ago i kept having this problem where air would go into the intake and into the canister. how would i know? because I could actually see bubbles in the intake hose going into the canister.

now, i got the problem of the air coming into the canister fixed. However, now every time i start the filter, there is air in the canister somehow and i dont know why. I can see the waterline inside the canister about an in or so from the top of the canister.

Ive tried priming, filling the canister with water, taking apart the canister, cleaning it, even checking the motor.

WHAT IS WRONG?! this filter is giving such huge headaches that i feel like just throwing it out a window.

This is from the Rena website. Other than what we talked about in chat, you may want to consider some of these suggestions:

Air can leak into the system through the intake side. Make sure all joints that are above the water line are tight and that the intake priming cap is tight. Check your hose connections at both ends (intake tube and Quick Disconnect Valve) are tight. Make sure the Quick Disconnect Valve is seated properly in the top of the motor. Check the Orings on the QDV to make sure they are not damaged. If you have any leaking around the canister, air may be coming into the canister from there. Try removing and shifting the canister Oring and re-sealing the top to the canister.
The final thing you should review is your setup instructions to make sure you are placing the filter in relation to the tank within the minimum and maximum distances. It is especially important with regards to the problem you describe. In a proper setup, all air is expelled from the system in the first 30-60 minutes. If you still have air after 60 minutes then something is wrong. I would recommend contacting the warranty department at 800-847-0659 or DocWellFish@aquariumpharm.com as they may have additional knowledge of this problem and other solutions.

I had a similar problem with my XP3. Turned out it was the o-ring going around the pump assembly. I took it out, rubbed it, stretched it, twisted it, and then put it back in in a different position. Works great now. If that doesn't work, Rena recommends replacing the o-ring all together.
