i had a snail die yesterday, and today the body has fallen out of the shell and the pods are having a huge feeding frenzy all over it. so i got thinking...more food = more pods, so could i periodically dropped a small piece of hot dog, or maybe a deli shrimp (but let me tell you, the hot dog is a lot more commonplace at my apartment than the shrimp) in the tank to feed them? some of these pods are HUGE, like 1/4 to 1/2 an inch long...they look like little godzillas or something.
LOL @ Hot Dog.. NO. Don't do it.. it's not a FW tank. I have a picture in my head of a buddy of mine with a FW tank feeding his oscars hotdogs and feeder mice.. weird to see in person.
I wouldn't do it personally, but if you do, I would stick to natural types of food from the ocean like shrimp, oysters, clams, etc. if you are going to put in meaty foods. You really have to test your water good though and change often if you feed like that. Also take out any uneaten food after a couple hours.

oscars get quite big and mice can be quite small
I wouldn't feed anyone hot dogs, let alone things in my tanks lol

haha, thanks guys. i figured it wouldn't be a good idea, but how would i know if i didn't ask? i just get a lot of enjoyment watching them devour this snail...it's pretty amazing how fast they're eating it, and how large some of the pods are. i think what little is left will definitely be gone by morning. let's hope i don't wake up in the middle of the night with one of these monster pods in bed with me!!!

I know exactly what your talking about. My tank has been fallow for 6 weeks now due to ich. Now the pods are every where some are like half inch. I drop in some NLS fish food and there all over it. LOL they have slot of personality. I see them fight and wrestle all the time. Funny stuff.
I'm thinking hot dogs are high in nitrates too.
Do you know...I saw a topic in MFK a few weeks ago about Ted Judy, a well-known cichlid expert, feeding his fish hotdogs. It's amazing how strongly-built his fish look. I've always been tempted since then to try the hotdogs but I'm a bit wary with the ingredients written on the package.
Thats why I don't eat them either. =)

I've heard of a Pacu eating half of a deli sandwich before...
I'd be very cautious of preservatives in prepared foods - especially in things like bacon, hot dogs - anything with an abnormally long refrigeration shelf-life.
