My week of just running the tank and making sure everything works went just fine. Heater that came with the kit has been keeping a consistent temperature and the water has been treated and has been running through the filter just fine. I upgraded the kit bulb to a 18' 15 watt 55000k daylight full spectrum bulb. Put in some gravel and a few rocks and a small decoration (all boiled first). I then put a Betta in the tank and he has been just fine for a week now. Added two live plants, I'm sorry I forgot which ones they where, but I'm sure you guys will know.

Not much too look at right now, but here is what my tank looks like so far:

Nice little tank. i would add a few more plants, give Mr. Betta some more hidy holes, etc. a nice broadleaf with leaves near the surface so he can nap.... lol. my bettas love to sleep on the leaves of their plants.

I wish you the best of luck with your new "co-worker". lol.

Nice tank, what a lucky little guy.

neat tank, i wish i could keep fish at work. i think that betta needs a friend or 2, and i agree about adding more hiding spots, al in all a great start.

wow nice tank the betta must be loveing it!

Nice. You do have a test kit...liquid style? Prepared for the water changes in this fishey cycle? Running it for a week didn't prepare it for fish.

Yeah, I plan to pickup more plants. I just wanted to see if these would survive first with the light setup I have and the tank etc. I've been doing regular water changes and water treatment for the water changes. He has been swimming around very happily! The plastic clear cup on my desk was what his home use to look like at the store!!!

That's a nice tank...it will distract you from your work! Hee hee. The betta is a really nice looking fish. The plants are great, I have those species also, but you might want to invest in a timer so that they are on and off also at weekends. That made a BIG difference in my office 10g, and now ALL of my algae is gone!!! The tanks get about 8 hours of 2.6w per gallon, per day, a small amount of Flourish weekly and of course whatever the fish put out. I also feel the plants make the water look cleaner! Your betta will enjoy very low flow rate on the filter I think. I intend to get a betta for my 5g desk tank sometime. Keep posting pics!

I plan to head over to Petco today. they have a decent timer that someone has been using in the office already for months now. Any suggestions for fish to mix with the beta? I'm also going to look into getting some wood and more plants today as well.
