View Full Version : Holy snail eggs, Batman!

I think I found at least 20 egg sacs in my tank today. I spent an hour scouring my plants for the things (I HOPE I got all/most of them). They came off pretty easy. I think one might have gotten up in my filter, but hopefully it came out when I rinsed it.
It looked like at least 2 egg sacs had been hatched already, and I found what looked like a limpet (but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a new snail).
Questions!
1. How long does it take for common ramshorn eggs to hatch, after being laid? I know at least one set was laid only yesterday.
2. Do snails act funny before they start laying? I noticed the past day or two, at least one pair of snails has held still for 30 mintues to an hour at a time while one was on the other's side.
3. Do ramshorns typically lay ONLY on plants/smooth surfaces? I looked all over my driftwood, but the only places I found eggs were on leaves, in the corners of the tank, and one on the filter intake.
4. Is there a resource with pictures of different snail egg clusters somewhere? The egg sacs I found didn't look like I expected, and I think it'd be a good thing to have around for all the new snail keepers out there.

1. 2-3 weeks, though I'm not 100% sure on that.
2. snails attaching to each other = them mating. They WILL lay eggs shortly after.
3. they will normally lay eggs on flat surfaces because it's easier for them to pop them out in their little bubbles. Although, I wouldn't say it will never happen inside driftwood cracks and holes. Just unlikely...
4. You may be able to google that.

Thanks for the reply :)

2 - Hah, thought that might be the case. I just didn't think of it when I saw them doing it. Well, I'll know when to start looking for eggs in the future!

Will they continue laying for more than 24 hours, or are they done after that? (In other words, should I do another egg sweep in a couple days?)

I'll try Googling for a list of egg pictures and see what I come up with. Guess I'll post here if I find anything worthwhile.

Make another sweep and lower feeding to a minimum. Sweep every 2-3 days for the next 1 week and a half or two. Just remember to keep feeding to a minimum and you won't run into that problem again.

I keep my feeding pretty low (once/day, fast once a week, and I know my danios pick around the tank between meals - the snails fend for themselves), but I also have live plants and a couple of leaves have browned recently - plus some brown growth (diatoms, I think I read?) has cropped up lately. I'm trying not to overfeed, but my tank's growing a little too well at the moment, haha. I think I need to prune my ferns a little bit. I'll do that on the next egg check.

Been searching Google for a while now. I'm not very good at it, but I haven't turned up any listings of what different species' egg bunches look like. Sounds like a project! Maybe something to do over the summer.
