i went from a gravel substraight to sand about 3mths ago and it has been nothing but problems for me. I have gone through 5 hob's in that time span and can't stop the sand from getting spat into the intake. i have tried everything. i was thinking of doing a wet dry but i can't buy the return pump right now and my stand really won't fit anything under it but a 10gal. what have you done to prevent this from happening. maybe there is something i haven't tried or thought about.l

I have had sand for several months now and have no problem. Maybe I can help.

How close to the sand is your intake?

Is your filter perhaps to powerful for your size of tank? This might cause the sand to always be stirred under up and get into the filter.

Is your sand really fine?

One thing you might try is to put a sponge over the filter intake. This will stop the sand from entering.

Is it the fish that are stirring up your sand? If so, you'll have to go back to gravel or get different fish that don't dig.

I suggest a canister filter. Even if it don't fit under your stand. These type filters pull the water through the filter before it reaches the impeller assembly so the sand gets trapped and does not affect the motor. I had the same problem until I made the change.
