Hi Everybody....

I have a question about using the API Test Kit, when checking the tube for the color to the cards...do you hold the tube over the white space on the card or lay it in the white space beside of the color chart? I myself hold the tube over the white space next to the color chart, but someone told me I was doing it wrong, that I should lay the tube down on the white spot. What is the correct way, or does it matter?

Thanks,
Sugarcookie

I usually look through the side of the tube, with the tube not quite touching the card. But I've often wondered if this is the correct way, as the color IS darker if you press it against the card, and darker still if you look through the top.

Great question, I'm interested to hear what others do.

Guess I'm not the only one that's wondered on this. My husband got the API saltwater test kit and one test said to look through the top for the right color. I've always held the tube over part of the colors to see which one it matches closest.

I both look through the side and down through the liquid column in the test tube, holding it against something white. The colors haven't been so different that I have to guess which reading is right.

Straight from the API instruction booklet that comes with the test kit...

"Read the test results by matching the test solution against the *** Color Chart. The tube should be viewed against the white area beside the color chart. Color comparisons are best made in a well-lit area. The closest match indicates the ...."

The *** is for pH, hi pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrates. It is the same for all of these tests.

You hold the tube against the card. Much like you would hold a sample of tank water against a white background to see a tint to water to determine color of algae.

Just another example of why it pays to read instructions.

As my Dad used to say: "If it doesn't work, hit it. If that doesn't work, kick it. And if that doesn't work, read the instructions."

BUT...personally you don't need to be rude about the question. It seems everytime I ask a question somebody has some committ.:angryfire:

Excuse me, but I did not make any rude comment to your question. I saw your bump, apparrently you were not satisfied with the responses.

I quoted you the info straight from the booklet. You responded with a post that was improper and had to be edited.
