rare St.Louis area earthquake

I felt it. I'm near Cincinnati, OH and I was brushing my teeth when I noticed the clothes hanging on the door shaking and the door swaying. I thought it was a ghost! 
But then it felt like the floor was vibrating, and I thought, hm, are we having an earthquake. I was actually surprised to find out I was right!

It was a 5.4 on the Richter scale, epicenter deep in the ground a tad over 100mi E/NE of me. I was surprised at how strongly I felt it being >100mi away. Propagation is a lot more efficient in this part of the country than in S.Ca. At thetime of the OP, I figured either we were were on top of a 3-4 quake, or it was a really strong one farther away... It took forever for the news to say anything about it (well, at least 10-15 min. longer than it would have taken them to report another incident involving alcohol and Britney/Lindsay/Paris).
It woke me up this morning. Usually I'm in the car when a tremor comes through, and so I don't feel it.
There'll be another big one some day, and it won't be pretty. I wonder how many buildings are actually built to earthquake code in the Mississippi Valley? I know Memphis has such codes, but a lot of the buildings were constructed before the codes were written. And the cities further away from the New Madrid Fault that would also be affected in a big quake don't have any precautions or plans.

Agreed. At least little ones like this tend to push off the "need" for a significant one. Given the lengthy duration of this one, I'd venture a guess that a lot of pend up stress was relieved.
I slept right through it, but many people here at work are saying they felt it. I am used to a 90 lbs puppy jumping in and out of bed with me so I did not even notice.
Ok, now I feel better, I heard things rattling on the dresser about 4:30 or 5 this morning.
I saw a mouse yesterday in the living room and got freaked out that it was in the bedroom. We have storage in the basement that rain water backed up in last week, think the plumbers scared him out of there and up in our apartment.

I'm battling a backache and was up when it hit. Our dog freaked out and started pacing back and forth in the bedroom. I thought I was imagining that the bed was rocking. I'm glad my fish tank is okay!
