Hello!

So, I'm cleaning out my 55 today, so that I can re-set up, and my HOB was being a pita. My grandfather was amusing himself by watching me. And he, in this off hand manner, "I have this filter in the house, I bought it for the saltwater, but your gram hates it..."

Sooo, I now have a fluval 305 canister filter sitting in my bedroom. My question is what do I need ot do to prep it for my 55? It was used on a salt water for a bit. Just clean it off, or bleach or....??

What would you recommend for media?

How strong of a current is this going to make in my tank? Would it be OK to make a baffle for it if its too strong (I'm hoping to put my betta in the 55)

thanks mg. Anythoughts on media, beyond sponge mat'l?

btw, i think its a 303, not a 305. I'll have to check when i get home. Either way, its rated for a 70, and i've only got a 55.

I suppose you want more details about my tank, silly me. My apologies.

I have sand substrate, will keep a sponge filter going.

It is the home of two 3"-ish plecos, 3 loaches, and possibly the betta (depending on how much water flow there is.)

I plan to plant it with some nutrient hungry low light plants.

I don't think i'll put carbon in all the time, but would like to put it in at first just to make sure any bad stuff gets pulled out.

thanks for the input guys.

You can dispers the discharge with a spray bar of the flow is an issue for the betta.

rbishop- yea, i know it will be. I'll have to see what I can figure out. And if he can't go in it, its not the end of the world- he has a ten gallon. I just would rather not have both tens set up if i can avoid it.

actually, last time he was in the 55, he seemed to like the bubbles and water flow, so i'm wondering if i can create a small 'dead' space where the water doesn't move so much, and then he can escape the water flow when he wants?

easydoesit- lol! sorry, no can do. if another one magically appears though, it's all yours :-D

btw, it is a 303.

That should easily be achievable with the decor placement....
