My next project is to turn this 6.6 Book Shelf tank into an "Invert Only" aquarium. I currently have 4 Mystery Snails (2 gold, 2 blue), and am planning to add shrimp once the tank has been up and running a couple of weeks. Here are my questions:

1. Which shrimp would be easier for a first time shrimp keeper? Cherry or Amano?

2. How many shrimp should I put in the tank that would make the shrimp comfortable but not stress out the bioload?

3. What temperature would be ideal for this tank of snails and shrimp.

1 i think that cherry would be better because they are probably much cheaper and they can adjust to almost any ph. Also they add lots of color
2 i think that you could atleast put 20 shrimp in some people have 10 shrimp per a gallon im not so sure about that.

3 the temperature could be around 74ish

10 per gallon is fine, but that's kinda like trying to MAX it out at once, which should not be a good thing. Especially since cherries will breed with minimal effort. I say you start out with 20, as the poster stated above. 10-20 will be a good start. Temp can be kept at around 74-78. The higher, the faster they grow but will also reduce their lifespan. 74 seems to be a good number though.

Cherries or Amano?
Cherries have better coloring, although Amano shrimp can actually change their colors depending on their surroundings. At least, that has been my experience. Amanos will NOT breed in a FW tank, they will need brackish for that. While on the other hand, Cherries will breed in FW just fine. Amanos seem to be more common in pet shops though, but cost at around 2-4 dollars each. Cherries are a rarer find in petshops and will normally cost more than an Amano. However, cherries can be easily found online from keepers and will cost only a dollar each! I don't think there are many people who keep amanos and breed them, so they're probably just as expensive as they are in pet stores.
Both are easy to keep, it's just a matter of preference at this point.

Wow! 20 shrimp! I was thinking 5 to 7 would be about the limit. LOL!

My Red Cherry Shrimp tank is easy to care for. :)

I started out with 10 and probably have around 50 now. They breed at an astonishing rate.

Good Luck!

Amano shrimp will not successfully reproduce in a freshwater environment. I would go with any of the common -- cheap neocaridina species (Red Cherry Shrimp is one variation, but the most common).

red cherries, are a great shrimp to start with. 10 per gal will be good. a temp about 74 will be fine.
