Sump questions

I was noticing the sump looked dirty so hubbyy and i shut it down took it apart to clean it and omg it was so scummy , is this normal ?
Do we have to do this every few months?
What are we doing wrong ?

Im not a clean freak i swear...............lol
if it was 20 years ago i would have probably tossed it because of the scum lol

please explain this process ..syphoning .........
Should i be doing this how often should i be doing this ?
I do this with tank and sump ?
I did purchase one of these contraptions for water changing but really i havent a clue to use it , its just a hose looking kind of thing thing .
Think ill have to check out my neibours .
What kind is the easiest and better ?

Syphoning out crud in a "sump" should / can be done as and when....When refering to a refugium, then do not syphon, should not be a need too...The contraption you got sounds like a Python by the way :)
