Hi everyone,

I have recently set up a 30gal hex tank, the tank is 24 in tall and about 18 across. Right now I have 6 danios and 8 white clouds in it. Eventually I want to get a pair of cichlids , as I just can't imagine having a tank without any cichlids at all. Any suggestions? I'm thinking maybe Keyholes, or would the tank be too small. I have a Bov Ram with an ap nijsseni in my 45 gal (used to be two bov rams but the larger ones kept picking on the smaller one so smaller ones now lives peacefully with my male guppies in a 20 gal) I also plan to add some cory's and 1 bn pleco to the tank. Any other cichlid suggestions would be appreciated. Right now the ph is 6.6 and its planted. the tank has only been set up over a month. I did use media from another tank, mixture of old and new gravel, mixture of new and water from other tank, etc so haven't seen a major spike so far. But I'm still going to wait another month before I add more fish. The fish in there now were transfered over a few at a time as I wanted to make some changes to my larger community tank.

thanks for listening

i think a keyhole pair would be nice, but skip the pleco. that would really be pushing the bioload. after a couple months 3 or 4 otos would be fine. need algae first.

thank you, I think a keyhole pair would be nice. I heard they are very gentle for a cichild. Have to really think about the pleco, i really do love them as well. All my tanks seem to end up with at least one.

Check out the peaceful, brilliant colored "Apistogramma cacatuoides" or commonly called "Cockatoo / Crested dwarf cichlid" They like a sandier substrate to sift through.
Plus a long fin albino bristlenose pleco will win you over too. They don't get much bigger than 5-6 inches and clean glass very well.
Here is a pic of each.

I believe keyholes get 4-5 inches, which would be too large for that tank imo. About the only cichlid you could really safely put in there would be pair of the dwarf cichlids.

4" maybe 5" is pushing the size of captive keyholes. tho they do get 'chunky'

I do agree tho a 30 hex may be suited best for dwarf cichlids.
