I just got a new starlight bristlenose pleco and was wondering if anyone had any pointers on them?

Never heard of a starlight BN. My BN loves cucumber and zucchini on a veggie clip. Make sure you have wood in the tank, and plenty of cover for the BN

Treat them like you do with other Ancistrus species.;)

If it's an L182 species (also known as a white seam) it is a blackwater fish, and thus requires very soft, tannic water.

:iagree: It could also be L183 (they're both sometimes called starlight plecos) but I think that also requires blackwater conditions.

L182 have no white seam, while L183 and a good number of other black water ancistrus do. There are a few types of black water looking ancistrus that actually come from harder conditions though, so don't just panic and drop your parameters. If the fish is that small, the odds are good he's tank raised, which should make him appreciably more capable of handling a wider range of parameters.

From your description, he could also just be a common bristlenose with nice dark coloring. It would be far easier to help if you could take a picture ;).

I don't understand what the L*** numbers are, like L183 ot L1120. What do they mean?

its a numbering system. a easy way to id a pleco. i dont know about you but i can never remember the latin names and common names can be very useless.

It's L for location (not really, it's for lorcaridae) but it ids what river they are from. With so many new plecs it's a way to differentiate them. They can change as they age & there are regional variations of the same kind but many look similar to other species.
