Fry have been free swimming for two days now. I know its hard to see them with the subtrate the color it is. It has been a joy watching them perform thier parental duties. They do it so well.

Don't mean to be hijacking, but how do you tell the difference between a male and a female? I know that the females have red spots on their belly, (especially when they are 'ready') but I am unsure whether I have a male...I know I have a female in my 20G High, but am curious whether or not the second I have is a male. (I know my sentences aren't making a lot of sense, I'm not sure quite why, but I just can't word things very well today. Forgive me, if you will.) As soon as I added the second convict, the one that was already in there, (which is definitly a female,) got much brighter...all her colors appeared more dominint and she is the most colorful convict I have ever seen. However, I think I see a tint of red on the 'male.' Also, the female is always chasing the 'male' around, never the other way around.

On the other hand, the 'male' is less colorful and has a smaller (I forget the last 'main' fin on a fish...dorsal?) dorsal fin.

I've seen convicts breed before, and still have a male convict at the Pet Store I work at, (I know he's a male after breeding him,) the thing is is that he is easily twice the size as the female. If the other fish isn't a male, can I add the one that's larger, but who's sexual identity I am sure of?

Again, sorry none of my sentences were very clear or concise. I'll try writing this again tommorow....

con females really dont get that big and males do. I would not get one too much bigger than your female as they can rough up the females pretty good if they are ready and the fems are not. Is there any gill flaring? or just running? if its just running I would say that you might have two females. I have found that a good way to make sure that you get a male is make sure when you pick him out that the tank he is in has females that are ready to go. More than likely if the one does not have the orange patch then you will know. That is the way picked my male out. It was funny cause the guy was going to get me a female, and I had to show him how to tell the difference. The only thing I an tell that is really different is that my female is more pale than the male, but that may be because she has had her brood. She gets very colorful before nookie time.

I go to PetsMart for some of my fish because there is a lady there who knows much more than I do about fish...however this time some new girl named 'Julie' was there. At first, she picked me out a Green Terror...good thing I'm always watching those things so carefully because I'm so scared of 'em...otherwise I might not have noticed it...(this fish was quite pale, and in a dry net.)

thats where I got my female con and my GT, I almost got one of the silver variety instead of the the gold, but decided against it for some reason. I wish now that I had gotten one but I would not give Killer back for any reason. I love that fish he is so personable. The only other fish that interacts with me like he does is my male con, and he is not nearly as playful.

I've now added what I am certain is a male to a tank with a what I'm certain is a female, and another con I don't have a clue about... I know this isn't a good idea as the other con will get beat up. He's about half the size of the male though, and a little smaller than the female. Also, the female was there before everyone else so she has her territory staked out. The Male and Female have already started what I would call flirting...the female is flashing her gills at the male, and then will kinda swim away, (not too fast though,) and have the male follow her, etc. The female is about half the size of the male however...I hope that's ok. The male doesn't seem to care. But is it usual for the female to turn almost all black during mating, as mine is?
