Hi,

there seems to be some conflicting info on these fish.

I have unpainted Chanda wolfii in my tank and some research on the net has left me a bit confused. most ppl do say that they require slightly brackish setups, but some ppl have said that these fish are actually NOT brackish, but are FW fish. even wikipedia state this as well:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass_fish

"Glassfish have been kept in aquaria for many years, but have a reputation for being delicate and difficult to keep. This may be related to a persistent myth that these fish need brackish water. In the wild they more commonly inhabit freshwater, and in captivity do well in slightly soft to moderately hard dGH 7 - 19, slightly acidic to slightly alkaline water pH 6.5 - 7.5."

???confused!!??

The common Glassfish (Parambassis ranga) is a freshwater fish, which also does well in low-end brackish.

Parambassis wolffii is also freshwater. It's quite uncommon though, so you might just have a mislabeled P. ranga.

everybody has a slightly different experience with them, there isn't really any right answer, fishbase has them listed as FW/BW. try keeping them in whatever tank you've got at the moment and if they don't do well then try them again in different conditions.

hmm, this article pretty much summarizes that most species of glassfish should be kept in FW, with only a couple doing okay in slightly brackish.

is it time to dispell the "glassfish are BW fish" "myth"?

I don't know the scientific name, as far as I know there aren't any subspecies so it should be clear-cut, but....there could be.
If you google Indian glassfish that is the scientific name that comes up.
