I see a lot of mystery snail clutches sold on aquabid. Are permits required to ship clutches? Or is that even legal?

You can sell/ship snails in the State you live in. To ship nationally or internationally requires a license. Research it if you want, but be cautious. Some places have strict laws regarding the importation or exportation of non-native species (Hawaii specifically).

I'm wondering if shipping the unhatched clutches is a way to get around obtaining the permits, or if they're just ignoring the laws.

did you ask them if they had permits. i would bet you still need them even for clutches.

You DO need permits to ship clutches. When you apply for the permits, you have to specify which life stages you will be selling the snails (eggs, juvenile, adult, etc). Its seems there are lots of *illegal* sales of brigs, clutches, and spixis available.

Shipping clutches is illegal. I have permits for every state including Hawaii. I wanted to ship clutches but was denied. The reason is the clutches are too similar to the giant apple snail clutches (Canas) which are plant eating machines. It's really the Canas they're worried about getting out and spreading...or at least they want to slow the spread as much as possible. So it's not the P.bridgesii snails themselves that are the problem...it's the resemblance to P.canaliculata ("Canas") that is the problem :)
It's fairly easy (although a little tedious) to get permits to ship the snails.

Thanks for the info y'all. I've purchased both snails and clutches from ebay and aquabid, but I never thought to ask the sellers about permits.

I guys.... i live in Portugal Europe and i need licenses to buy that stuff.... but...

I bought a last year some fish in aquabid, and when i asked the vendor about license he said i should not worry they had everything covered.. offcourse my vendor was from Singapore and the fish were shipped by mail under terrible condition and stuffed in the mail box like normal letters, they arrived in terrible conditions an i will never buy anything more in Aquabid

My 2 cents

I wouldn't judge all of aquabid on one seller.

Wait a minute...msjinkzd has permits to ship clutches!!! So, 1) I was wrong and 2) I need to amend my permits or re-apply! :wall: Thanks for the heads up msjinkzd!!!!!

O.k., I had to ask for myself :) Turns out I was wrong by not being wrong  I just received this reply when inquiring about permits for shipping eggs (04/30/08)...

"APHIS will not authorize the interstate movement of eggs for the aquatic
snail Pomacea (bridgesii) diffusa. If you know of someone who has a permit
authorizing interstate movement of these eggs we can assume that the
application was processed incorrectly, the errors were not detected during
the final review and the permit was issued in error. APHIS has the
authority to revoke any issued permits and seize and safeguard unauthorized
specimens. You may contact me directly if you have additional questions.

I need to go check all my permits, lol. I don't ship clutches anyway, but the one I checked the other day had that checked as an acceptable life stage to ship. Thanks for the info!!
