View Full Version : agressive neons??
i have a group of 5 neons tetras ( yes i do know they are small but was quite busy recently so will be going to the lfs to get more soon! :D ) but the weirdest things about this five neons are that they are VERY fond of attacking each other! as in they would love to chase each other around and try to nip each other and occasionally my lamp eyes in the tank!
is it because it is too small a group? or just that i got weird aggresive neons? or that when i get a bigger group they will not nip so much?
thanks for all your help!

I think that seems normal for Neons...a larger group will probably help to make sure that individual Neons aren't picked on more than others.

I noticed a similar behavior in a small school of white clouds that I had. There was a big bully in the school who would nip at the little guys...though occaisionally they would charge back!

i heard that those fish are in the pirahana family so they tend to be agressive sometimes

White Clouds are not in the Piranha family.
Actually, Neons belong to a different family, but they are Characiformes (i.e. they're in the same order). There may be some aggression spread throughout the Characiformes, but I would not use that as a guideline for the entire order.
ChilDawg, FLNGroovy1, SwedishFish: thanks for your help! is there any methods that you use to try and stop it like feeding them a little more, a little less? i don't you, you all say its playing. but when i looks at it, they look just as bad as my previous rams whch i had to give away because the ram was attacking my cory!
anyway thanks!

Are any individuals succumbing to more abuse than any others? If so, I would say a way to save them would be to add more Neons to the shoal...I don't think that changing the feeding amounts will do anything but make them sicker (if fed more) or perhaps too lethargic to function (fed much less or much more).
