View Full Version : X-Fish: Mutant Neons?

Stocked my wife's 10g tank yesterday. It has a plastic divider breaking it into two 5g sections. Each section has 1 betta, 2 cories, and 4 tetra (4 neons on one side, 4 black neons on the other).
Reg neons keep showing up on the other side, and we can't figure out how. There's no holes around the sides or bottom, and there's about 1/2 in. of divider above the water.
So, the corrent choices are:
A) Neons can jump higher than 1/2 in. (didn't think they could jump at all)
B) They somehow ride up the filter intake and come out it on the other side
C) They can pass through walls.
Anyone know if neons can jump?

I'm sure that Neons can jump...those bodies are built to be powerful enough to withstand currents...and most fish will jump when given the chance and motivation to do so.

One of my danios jumped about 2 inches out of the water when I was trying to fish her out of the tank. She jumped up onto the top of the heater - out of the water !!! Luckily I got her and she finally cooled down and is fine now.

Wow that is ssoooo wierd,
I've had my neons for a year now and today, out of the blue, I found one partly dried up on the glass bar at the top of the tank
spent most of today wondering why it jumped out of the water :(

Nobody really knows why...there might have been a slight disturbance in the room, there might be poor water quality, they might just feel like jumping or see something tempting outside of the tank! Wish I could help more...

Well, now we found a black neon on the reg neon side, so the miracle of using the filter to switch sides is ruled out :)
And we've given up moving them.
In other news, one of the betta died... has a big dent in his head, noticed it about 5 minutes after he was put in the tank yesterday, don't know if that contributed. Everything in the water is virtually 0 (fish in it less than 24 hours), and he was flaring when he died (stuck in the pose, actually), I'm suspecting a physical issue rather than stress/water quality, rest of the fish are fine... at least for mutant, ethereal neons. :)

The tetras could have scared him to death...also, too many fish in too short of a time could kill them all quickly...the ammonia level is probably too high!!!
The hole in the Betta head is probably from being nipped by little Neon mouths.

We're about 90% sure that 'hole' was in his head before we put him in the tank, goof-up on our prt in selecting him, I think.

Alrighty then, my mistake. You did put a large bioload in that tank rather quickly...can you take back the Tetras and Cories for a while?

I could dump them in my 29 for a while, it suffered a toddler-related fishkill a couple of weeks ago, and just has a pleco and 1 rainbow keeping it cycled until I decide what to do with it.

Rainbowfish or Rainbow Cichlid?
If the former, I would recommend switching the fish to that.
If the latter, I'd have to consider other options.

Fish, not cichlid.
In fact, now that the 10g is running, I wanna convert the 29g to a cichlid tank, but can't find the ones I want (only one LFS doesn't help)

The pleco and rainbowfish might be a little much for the 10g, especially when added to the already-large list of inhabitants...

Oh, they weren't going into the 10g, more than likely gonna trade them in, or get a separate 10g just for those two if the LFS won't take them.

Gotcha...I just wanted to make sure.
