I'd like to hear from folks what the advantages of having a Sump are as opposed to a Protein Skimmer hanging on the back?

I currently have a 75 gallon saltwater and will be upgrading my 10 gallon to a 30 gallon. I've been contemplating doing a sump for the 30 gallon, if it's worth all the time & effort. I don't even know how those are set up.

I'd appreciate any suggestions, insight, opinions, etc.

Thanks

A sump does not replace a protien skimmer.

The advantage of a sump though is that you do not need to have the skimmer hanging on the back of your DT, you can hang it in your sump instead and get it out of sight.

It also is easier to maintain, provides a more naturaul filtration system, and give you the ability to put all your maintenance equipment and do your water testing in a more convenient location.

A lot of people also modify or tap off their sump in order to create a refugium.

Easy to add different filtration methods (refugium, skimmer, mechanical, more LR)

Increases water volume

Place to hide equipment (skimmer, heater)

Place to add in equipment for auto-topoff/auto-dosing (if applicable)

This is a old picture, but you get the idea. 29G tank with a sump/fuge.

Pros=Place to hide equipment, keep water level in tank the same, add more water volume.

Cons=Needs space to setup, initially intimidating, potential for overflows if not designed correctly (use a check valve on the return).
