ok, so I just read a paper sent home by the school my children attend, ..according to the paper, spanking a child can lead to children :
making fun of the weak
hitting other class mates,
and ....
ANNOYING TEACHERS????????
are you kidding me?..this paper actually says that! theres tons more, i really should type the whole thing up, but come on, ..
am I the only one who thinks this is ridiculous?..

I am not arguing the spanking point, ..its up to each parent what they decide, I won't judge anyone either way, but what got me was the fact that it leads children to " annoy teachers" ..that statement just is plain stupid.

That is so funny. I would complain to the school, how would children who are spanked annoy teachers? That makes no sense!!!

well kids who get spanked by parents might test teachers a little more to see how much they will tolerate, or they might just act crazy in school because they know they can get away with it without getting spanked. the note was pretty strange though, they couldve clarified more with what they meant or reworded it atleast.

I just couldn't believe out of all of the side effects they could have used, ( ie: depression, agitation, negative feelings and emotions,) they used those, ..I mean, i think, they could have atleast spent extra money to pay someone with half a mind into child develpoment to write this, if they were going to send it home. I had to giggle,
Annoy teachers....
what a reason, ..

Amen to that! Of course, nowadays you would probably end up being sued if you spanked your student.
But I bet kids who are spanked are better behaved than kids who aren't. I mean, who wants to come up with all these fancy punishments when all a kid needs is a spanking to learn a lesson. Seriously, people...

I basically did my own thing, even though I was spanked. Made no difference. I just stayed clear of my dad for a while. It was just upsetting and made me sad.
Then again, I'm one of those people who doesn't have a tendency toward stupid stuff.
Wow, I can't believe the school would even send something like this out? Craziness........Since when is it the schools business how you punish your kids? And seriously, annoying the teacher?!?

What was worse was, it was phrased like i wrote it, ..I may have to scan the paper so you can all read it, ..It actually had the line. then the three reasons, ..lol, i am still flabbergasted, ..I may have to call the school in the morning:) and annoy a teacher, haha

LOL, do it Judge. I agree spanking should be up to the parents. IMO spanking is effective and doesn't leave emotional scarring if done appropriately. I was spanked and it didn't affect my relationship with my parents and my kids still play and clown around with me. My son does fine at school and respects his teachers.

seriously.
a few months ago a kid in connecticut got suspended from school and wasn't allowed to attend his honor student dinner because he was caught buying and eating Skittles. apparently buying candy from other students (and during a LUNCH BREAK, no less - very important and educational period in school) was a terrible crime. after a public outcry the suspension was removed from his record, but he still missed out on his dinner.

i just don't know how you're supposed to punish kids these days for misbehaving. most of the *bad* ones who get into trouble would rather be suspended than at school anyway. I was a really good student, but i got in-school suspension one time in high school. basically you sit in a room all day in cubicles with the other bad kids and one teacher. the teacher is usually the newest (read: youngest) coach. being new, he wants to get along with all the kids instead of making them fear him. so they listen to music and read magazines all day. rather than being in class where they can potentially learn something, the homeworks from each class are sent down and fingers are crossed that they get done. oh, and you might get to go outside for a little while and screw around, i mean pick up trash around the school.
the reason i was suspended? well, i didn't have a car and i had two younger sisters who attended different schools which started before mine did, so they had to be at their schools first. my parents (over whom i had and still have absolutely no control) would occasionally drop me off at school late. late three times. . . suspended. it actually got so strict that it was more "acceptable" to miss school completely if you were going to be late that day rather than show up a few minutes after the bell. it didn't matter if you had been to the dentist or doctor, any late arrival was counted against you.

Maybe because it's so boring. It was extremely boring and harsh when I went that one time. I also went to detention for BS- my history teacher put the entire class in detention for some stupid reason. I felt really dirty still, lol.
Honestly, I've found many people who use groundings, threats of a bad future, keeping the kid inside, etc has been very effective. Teaching the kid why things are important seems to be a lot more effective than simple punishment.
Want to clarify: spanking seems to work for some people, and not for others. It's probably just more of a case by case things.
I also know a girl who got punished by being locked in a cockroach-infested garage...

LMAO!!! Kids are so annoying and testing in school because there is such a lacking in discipline anymore DUH!!
No, I do not think children should be beaten, there is a difference in spanking and beating...but I do not think kids were so "ballsy" when they knew there was going to be a consequence to there actions. Now it is blamed on their parent instead of them even. Heck, if the rules were the way they are now when I was in school, I'd of been alot more gutsy too, toward my teachers!!!! LOL

Off topic, but kids really have gotten gutsy......Here's one for you:
I teach middle school. I have been on yard duty for the last few weeks when kids were doing incredibly dumb things (climbing on the roof, fighting, threatening to jump other kids etc) and I have been calling them out on their behavior and giving them consequences. I got out to my car the other day, ad found a giant X3 (a gang sign) keyed on my car. So far, the nefarious artist has remained anonymous.....
The total damage (pre-insurance) is over $1000 dollars in new paint, labor and a rental for 6 days....... I love the kids, and most of them really do want to learn, but **** it's hard when you know that there're no censequences that will straighten a kid out!

I used to work in a store. There was a woman with a 6-7 year old. He started throwing things around. I said "No-no!!! Don't do that" because his mother was ignoring him. The the kid flipped a finger at me. Can you believe it? His mother did not do anything to correct. I don't understand these new ways of dealing with kids.

It's amazing how often you see things like this these days. This has become one of my biggest pet peeves, children that act like hellions in public and their parents just ignore them. I can't even fathom it, when I was a child I was too afraid of my parents to act up in public, and I wasn't even spanked that often!! Kids are missing that healthy fear of their parents and parents are too afraid to punish their kids.

My 6 yr old told my hubby that his friend (classmate) showed him how to shoot the finger! We explained that it was just like using a really bad word and luckily he doesn't know or repeat a lot of the bad words he's heard. We encourage him not to even say words like dumb or stupid. And if it's said on tv he'll say "ooooh, they said a bad word" lol. He's a bit more gentle natured than most boys and more so than our 2 year old son who is very free willed already.

LOL, reading this thread brought up some interesting memories for me. My very first day in Kindergarten my best friend and I, unknowingly, ditched school. It started me off on my wayward youth. In a nutshell;
We went to class. Did some stuff, then went out for recess. We ended up in one of those large concrete pipe things, in the sand box, playing with matchbox cars. We didn't hear a bell or teacher call us back in to class. So, when we got out of the pipe everyone was gone. I lived just about 100 yards from the school so me and Kenny (my friend) walked to my house, got some Tonka trucks and went back to the empty lot by the school, to play.
My mom still nags me about that, and I'm nearly 40. Perhaps I'll tell my wife I've been naughty.
