First of all, it wasn't me who won the fish. Anyway, my brother brought a feeder goldfish home from the carnival yesterday, and I want to make sure I did the right thing. I put him/her in a 20 gallon rubbermaid container thats never been used with a Penguin Biowheel 200 filter and since it wasn't cycled, I put in a sponge from one of my cycled AC filters. I added Prime and Aquarisol to remove the fish of any parasites. The temperature is currently at 70 degrees and I have a treasure chest hideout in there. I'm going to the pet store tomorrow to buy some supplies. How does it sound so far and what should I buy besides plastic plants? Also, I have and old air pump. Should I buy a new airstone and use this? Thanks!

P.S. If anyone has a petition against giving out fish at carnivals, I would love to sign it.

Good plan. Stick with hornworts as these won't easily be consumed by goldfish. Plants can prove useful at times improving the water quality by consuming the nitrates.

I feel your pain. About a month ago my girl brought home not one, but two feeder goldfish from the carnival. Luckily I had a 37 g up and running that was barely stocked. They are both still there at just over an inch long each. They will be going into a pond when they hit the three inch mark.

Sounds as tho youve done all you can for now. Keep a check on your ammonia and nitrite levels, changing the water as often as necessary to keep them as low as possible until the biological filter can catch up. Of course if you put a seeded filter in and its only one small fish, you should be OK.

To add to what lupin said, plants will also use ammonia and nitrite as well and help ease the cycle along, possibly even silent cycling your tank.

Good plan. You can easily find 60 g rubbermaids which aren't too expensive :)
You still have the pee to deal with, but the poo is thankfully easily scraped off the bottom. They're pretty and personable fish who are super hardy! Sucks having it sprung on you, though.

True. It's okay though. My mom and brother were gonna put it in a bowl, but I wouldn't let them. I actually feel good that I saved him.

Isn't it funny the kids bring home these 25 cent goldfish and we spend many dollars setting them up? But it's the right thing to do and the fish are usually quite pretty and personable and well worth it. Good job.
