Hey all,

Just thought I'd share my experience over the past day. I've got ten guppies that I bought this week and figured I'd try my hand at breeding. Well, it happened a whole lot sooner than expected. I knew that two of the guppies that I bought looked like they were already pregnant although I didn't expect them to be ready to drop their fry so soon.

Although I have no way of knowing what male sired the fry I have a pretty good feeling that it was a male of the same lineage. The guppies that I bought were all of the same coloring and were separated out in tanks at the LFS not only by sex but also separate from other guppies of differing colors.

Here's a couple pics of my guppies and the new fry.

New Fry (Born 5/2/2008, Pics Taken 5/3/2008)

Overall I've got 16 living in a 5 gallon square bucket with a homemade sponge filter and a 2.5" terra cotta pot of grass. I've been feeding them powdered Tetra-Min flakes & a slurry of hard boiled egg yolk and dechlored water.

Newborn fry & Completely disinterested ADF

Some of the fry dropped unexpectedly in the 10gallon tank that also is home to two african dwarf frogs. One of the ADF's was in his terra cotta pot that I use for feeding (guarding his food which he has a habit of) and surprisingly was completely disinterested in the new little additions to the tank.

So far, it's a fun experience. Guess all there is to do now is wait and see how many survive and what they're like.

Congratulations! Did you see them being born. I stayed up a whole night once when I first had guppies doing that. I have one suggestion, although the egg yolk is great food for them it will polute your water. When I first started I fed baby brine shrimp and the powdered food by Hikari. I also tried the egg yolk. They loved it but it's really messy and hard to judge how much to put in. I now leave them in the community tank and I just make sure some of the food I feed is finely ground up.

Have fun - they're tough little guys and I'm sure they'll all make it. Post more pics when they get their colours.

This is going to be a dumb question. Why is your frog blue?

You're right about the egg yolk making the water cloudy, although I've since switched to the Hikari First Bites and the fry love it. ;-) I don't find that it really makes the water all that cloudy compared to the egg yolk. Also, with the egg yolk slurry it tended to get drawn to the sponge filter and wouldn't be in the water long enough for the fry to actually eat it. The frog appearing blue was just the lighting. On another note, my ADF's got frozen bloodworms for the first time today.. and I must say.. They LOOOVE them compared to the freeze dried.

Thanks! Yup, We're proud parents.. and will probably be so again here in the next couple days. I have one other female guppy that's so fat she's either going to drop fry or explode in the near future.

The fry from this recent batch now look more like tiny fish, have visible fins and are frenzying at the surface at feeding time. There are now 15 that have survived so far with no visible defects. They've been moved into a breeder net in the main tank with their mother now where they're safe from being eaten. I figure this way there's a more stable environment for them. The larger water capacity and being a fully cycled tank should be much better than a 5gallon bucket and water changes; it also frees up the bucket for the new mother when she starts to drop fry.
