Opinions on sand types for reef.

1) What size (i.e. mm diameter)to get? I do want to have diamond gobies and some other sand sifters, so what's best for them?

2) Packaged Live Sand any good? It's expensive and without nutrients, I can't see the bacteria living that long in a bag. Thoughts on this?

3) I want a deep sand bed (no filters) in a 46g bowfront, so I'm thinking that I'll need about 100lbs or more of sand. About right?

4) Are trace elements in the sand available to the fauna?

5) Does color matter? I love the black sand I've seen and Dr. F&S, but it's expensive too.

6) Any good links to products?

Thanks guys.

BTW: I bought the second light and a few minor pieces for the tank today. It's getting there.

<<Sugar grade sand, and mix in with it, 1.0 to 2.0 sand. This will provide a varied sand bed>>

<<Watse of money in my opinion. I dont see how sand, which is stored in cold water for X ammount of time, then shipped to a supplier and then brought by the end user can possibly have much life in it at all..>>

<<Sounds about right to me>>

4) Are trace elements in the sand available to the fauna?

<<No, this will come from the live rock as it seeds the sand bed>>

5) Does color matter? I love the black sand I've seen and Dr. F&S, but it's expensive too.

<<Personal preference in my opinion>>

6) Any good links to products?

<< Caribsea products >>

Thanks guys.

Added some comments above in red.. :)

i found CaribSea special grade reef sand on petsmart.com (i know..i dislike them to a point too) but it was 26.00 per 40lb bag, and if you spend over 60.00? i think, shipping is free. I ordered 3, 40lb bags.. and its the sand alot of reefers use.. at least from what G.A.R.F. recomends... normally the lowest ive seen special grade reef sand is 1$ per pound, so its a considerable savings..

anytime!
