Does anyone have any ideas if it is possable to store Live Rock for a extended period of time with minimal die off? I am breaking down a tank and if I can't sell it I dont want to have it all die. I plan I starting a new tank eventually. What about leaving it in a tupaware container with an air pump for water flow? Any idea's on what kind of lighting it would need and how often you would need to change the water or could I just keep adding fresh water?

If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Thanks

HI there, I'm definitely on the "use light" side of things. Lots of the creatures on LR are photosynthetic and need light. Any light is better than none but I doubt you'll need metal halides if there aren't major corals on the rocks.

You'll need water movement so a powerhead or two in the tuperwear seems fine. Whatever you need to stabilize temperature in your area (chiller or heater). If you have a left over filter from your old tank, no harm in throwing that on too...shoot, are you sure you need to break it down?

How long term is long term?

I agree with journey advice. Its definitely possible.

I see no problem with long term storage if you can keep up on those things. I have seen large agriculture coral facilities use rubbermaids for tanks in order to cut down on cost. Its like having an aquarium without the clear material. So be prepared to monitor salinity and don't let the parameters goes crazy.

The only thing I would worry about is chemicals from the rubbermaid leeching into the water after a long period. Maybe someone can offer more insight to that.

The Rubbermaid Brute series of storage bins and garbage cans are made of food grade material that is not suppose to leach anything. They do, of course, cost more than the standard or Roughneck series of Rubbermaid, but if you want that extra piece of mind, it's available. Of course, I've also read of many people using the plain Rubbermaid and Sterlite containers without any problems.

Thanks for all the help. I do need to break it down, I am moving several times in the coming months and want to set up back up once I settle in for good. The other option is to try to sell the Live Rock or the entire set up. I could set up again in as little as 3 months or maybe longer. You think it can be done for this period of time?

Thanks for the advice on the Brute Series
