hey you guys, i have salt and fresh water tanks and often i feel like all i do is water changes. well, anyway, long story short, i got my fresh water confused with salt water and i did a water change with brand spanking new unbuffed RO/DI water. isn't it just great? i figured that out by about third gallon of fresh water poured into my reef tank. so, as soon as i figured it out, i poured some water back out of the tank and filled it with the right water. the fresh water was freshly made and very cold, but the salt water was sitting out for few days, mixing, so it was room temperature. my water in the tank dropped 5F due to me pouring fresh cold water in. well, i'm holding my fingers crossed, hoping there will be no deaths and no desease outbreaks. so far everyone is eating. :wall: i had to tell you guys to alway remember to pay close attention and don't overdo it. i lost my mind with all the water changes. it's like an ongoing process and i'm filling buckets with fresh water one after another 24/7. i'm going to downsize

yes. i am debating on either i want to let salt water go or my discus. actually, i have been debating before, but decided to keep everything. i can't use my tap water because it's not good water at all. so, it looks like i have to continue to mangle with buckets. freash water is cheaper and easier than salt water to keep. however, i dreamed of keeping reef tank for years untill i finally got it and it would not be good to let it go now. i really would hate it if down the road i decide that i want to try again to set up the tank that i got rid of. the funny thing is that all my friends found strange years ago that i had dry corals and other things for my salt water tank but no tank. then later i had a tank filled with dead corals for few years with no fish or anything live, i called it "The dead sea". it was nice, cheap, headache free tank, and no water changes needed. it was an actual salt water in that tank (i dumped an unknown amount of Instant Ocean in), and only now i wonder why. now, i have an addiction. i need to let one or two of my three tanks go. which one and how do i do it? do i need to attend fishoholic anonomus?

I have 4 fresh water tanks (22, 30, 55 and 75 Gallons) and 1 saltwater tank (75 gallon). I do small (5-10 gallon) water changes each week and have a RO/DI system in the basement. I can do all the fresh water tanks in about an hour and the salt tank takes an hour itself, so it just like other chores. I also use different colored buckets for Freshwater vs saltwater so no mix up. Just depends on how much you enjoy this hobby.

I keep my sw premixed in a trashcan in the basement, and I do wcs on my reef tank first so there's no mix up. Of course, I fill all my fw tanks with the hose so it would be tough.

I wouldn't really say ditch the salt... you're better than me for having that kind of time to care for it. I'm more interested in the frequency of adding fresh water... I find i go through 40 or 50 gal. a week in the summer With my 90 gal. fresh and 2 10's also fresh, so I can totally relate. Best of luck

don't mind MG, he just has some unfounded vendetta against sw tanks.
