I have two lion heads in a 30 gallon tank. One day only one was swimming and the other one was missing. Upon investigation, I saw that the power head had slipped off the uplift tube and was sucking on the missing fish. He was motionless and I thought dead. As I pulled him off the power head, though he moved. So I held him loosly in my hand and swam him around in the water. After fifteen minutes of this, he quit moving so I set him down on the bottom of the tank and went for a bowl to catch the drips when I took his body from the tank. When I came back, though, the other fish was swimming around with this fish on his back and every time it slid off, he swam under it and pushed it back into action. He kept this up for a good 45 minutes and I thought it was very sad that he wouldn't accept that his tank mate had died. Suddenly, the injured fish started to swim on his own. He was swimming well an hour later and had a good appetite so I put Stress Coat and a little sea salt into the tank. That was about four months ago and the injury is healed. So now I call them Hero and Survivor. Has anyone else ever experienced bahavior like this with gold fish?
