So my new Green Terror has finally settled into the 125 and like my Dempsey only gets chased periodically by the bigger polleni, which is great. If I only fit three fish in that tank I can live with it, although I'd still like to put my jewel and salvini in there if it works out once they're bigger.

The problem is I've been keeping my male rainbow cichlid in the 125 as well with plans to move him back to the 55 when the smaller fish get bigger. He's pretty tough and holds his own with the polleni and JD. But not the GT, who has decided he can't stand the rainbow. They're the same size but for the first time the rainbow has ran into a fish he just can't handle. The GT chases him all over the tank and has marked him up a bit. In a way it's just. The rainbow has always been a brute.

So, I'm now going to look at a used 29 that a guy in my area has for sale. It should be big enough for a rainbow since they only reach four inches. The thing is this will give me four tanks and I can't help but wonder if I'll ever stop buying them. It's exciting, but kind of scares me, too.

If there is one thing that is very clear to me about cichlids it's that you can't predict anything. The fish itself, not the species, determines compatibility and I have some really picky fish.

 Ahhhh, MTS. I believe they now have meetings you can attend for help. "Hi, my name is (state your name) & I'm a 'fish-a-holic'!!:grinyes::grinyes::grinyes:
Seriously though, they are often very unpredictable & temperments will vary even among stated compatible species. 'T'

True that. I've had some success buying several of the species I want to keep together, and weeding them out by personality. Of course, this doesn't always work either, as I am currently needing another tank while my QT plays host to mean fish. All will be well for months, then all of a sudden, one fish decides they can no longer tolerate another. My experience with Dempseys and Terrors have been the same as yours. My male Terror wouldn't tolerate any other fish, and didn't really even like his mated female very much. I have kept Dempseys with several other fish species and been fine.

The GT has let up a bit on the rainbow but I still bought the used tank and stand last night. I still have to set them up. The guy gave me a 10 g, too. I'm now trying to decide what to do with them. The 29 will be for cichlids and probably the rainbow but I hate to devote it to one fish.

On an unrelated note, what is good for cleaning crusty build up off an old tank lid.
