HI there - there continues to be an occasional clicking in my tank. I have removed the primary clicker - a mantis shrimp. But I'm not sure what could be making the remaining clicks...my heater does occasionally but not enough to account for what's happening I think.

So, my first question is...what else clicks?

Today I discovered a small clear shrimp. He was very fast moving, did not like the flashlight and APPEARED to have one appendage bigger than the other...like a claw on one side. I can't swear it...might be wishful thinking. I couldn't see the eyes to get an idea about eye stems etc. Any ideas of ID? No chance of getting a picture...he's speedy and small. Maybe half and inch.

So, my second question is...what could he be and is he bad.

Lastly, sometimes at night, I notice a flashing of light in my tank. Like lightening.

So, my third question is...what could produce that kind of lightening effect in the tank?

THANKS!

I used to have a SW tank a while ago and if I remember correctly, what youre describing sounds like a pistol shrimp. look that up and let me know what you think

oh yeah, it's definitely a pistol shrimp. they're not a bad thing at all. i actually just purchased one today...of the red banded variety. the clicking sound is what you hear when the shrimp snaps its larger claw. it's how they hunt...they stun their prey by snapping it and sending shock waves through the water. but you don't have to worry about them going after your fish...it's most likely way too small to go after any of your fish. here's a link to a picture...hope this information helps.

Pistols are fun, I have one in my 3 gal. Their main prey I believe is cleaner shrimp and other small shrimp his size or smaller. He wont bother any shrimp or coral.

That picture looks JUST like him! And in the picture it looked like his stomach lit up...maybe that's what the "lightening" is in my tank. Cool.

What is the goby that people buy to go with their pistol shrimp?

i know that the yashia goby will pair up with a pistol, i've seen it more than once. i think that the orange spotted goby, hi fin banded goby, maybe the watchmans, and the dracula? every source i've looked at is different as to what goby will willingly pair with a goby. but it's a pretty cool relationship to witness.

get a picture of the pistol or look online. not all will pair up with gobies just as not all gobies will pair up with pistols
