Has anyone out there, when first starting with FW or SW, ever realize that there first attempts with their aquariums were WAY out of line and breaking major (if not all) aquarium rules and STILL have success with their aquariums and fish? I think one of the biggest rules I broke in the beginning was putting all types of fish together that were said to be HUGE no no's. ones that should basically tear each other apart. I had anything from Oscars, Firemouths, Blue Rams, Other random cichlid types, and even an african butterfly fish mixed up... I once even mixed a three spined toadfish with a green spotted puffer.... which that one didnt work like the freshwater did. i also never checked the levels of anything in my tank.... never changed water... I vacuumed the gravel maybe twice a month. somehow the water stayed clear and the fish stayed healthy. I no longer have a lot of those fish, due to the fact that they were in a 30 gallon tank... another mistake for oscars and some of the larger cichlids i had. and my brackish tank with the toadfish and puffer ended up with the puffer inflated stuck in the toadfish's mouth... the puffer ended up dead though. and the toadfish lived.

Anywho... I am extremely new to posting and have no idea if im really posting anything interesting or worth anyones while... just thought id post something randomly thought of to see if it may get anywhere.

hmm...well I had some betta's when I was like 10 years old in a little tank (Maybe a gallon?) with a (probably common) pleco...strangely enough, even with no water changes or anything "special", he lived for awhile...

My mother in law also has 2 Bloody Parrot Cichlids (1-~6", 1-~4"), 2 Common Plecos (1-~8", 1-~4"), 2 Pink Kissing Gouramis (4&5"), 3 other small gouramis (all's I know is one is neon blue dwarf gourami)- they're all about 3", and one Iridescent Shark- about 8-9"...in a FIFTY-FIVE!!! This is AFTER I convinced her to get a bigger tank, being that she had all the above in a 29!!!
On top of all that, she refuses to do water changes, and only adds water to the tank when it evaporates. She also overfeeds, and her water paramaters are off the charts- which I know because I tested the water.

It gets a little annoying too, to be honest. My fiance and I are living with her...and I have 3 tanks set up (which are currently set up different than my sig. thanks to Ich), all of which I do weekly w/c's and test water frequently and whatnot...she has said to me like 4-5 times this week alone, "I don't know why you do all that work with your fish. They're just fish. They're just there to enjoy. You put too much work into it. They're living better than they would out in the wild with all the pollutants. My fish are happy and healthy"-- yes, I'm sure they are, with they're 86 degree temperature water, ammonia, nitrate, and nitrates being the highest the API test kit will go.
