ive always been told ya cant have a big sw tank without having it drilled for a sump setup....

but im staring to see alot of people that dont have drilled tanks.....and they are 100+gallons.....

whats the deal??????

do they "HAVE" to be drilled or not?

if not......what is needed to set one up?
i have a 75g that i was wanting to setup as saltwater but couldnt find no one to drill it so i abonded it.......

No certainly not!

It is more convenient. Less likely to ever have a spill. With large tanks "a spill" can be a really big spill! So doing things that reduce the chance of any spills dramatically, makes it "a requirement" to a lot of people.

It is like having a cake with frosting. The cake tastes great by itself, but don't you wish you have frosting too?

After you have set up the tank, it is usually too late to add frosting.

Our 90g tank isn't drilled and we've been fine using a U-tube style overflow box for the last couple of years. We did, however, buy the tank used. Any new tank we would buy to set up as a saltwater tank would be drilled though. I find the drilled tanks to be more convenient and somewhat less worrisome, despite the amount of space essentially "lost" that the internal overflows occupy.
