So, I just went out and bought a 29g biocube for my first sw tank. I have been doing alot of reading and am getting ready to start. I plan to make this a reef tank (I know I can't grow everything in this) and plan to start it up in about a week or two. Is there any particular salt mix that is better than another? (I will be adding this to RO/DI water)
I personally started out using Instant Ocean, but switched to Reef Crystals after I used up my first bucket of Instant Ocean. I don't have any real basis for saying why one is better than the other, besides the additional benefits Reef Crystals advertises over Instant Ocean. The corals in our tank seem to look better after switching to Reef Crystals, but it could just as easily be related to the tank maturing as it was the switch in salt mix.

Most people use Instant Ocean, so it must be ok.

I use Tropic Marin Pro. Once my current bucket of 200gal of salt runs out I might be switching becuase the LFS that got me hooked won't carry it anymore becuase it is getting too expensive. Time for me to check online. I really like the results I have gotten with TMP. Reef crystals gets excellent reviews and on WWM you can look up articles on comparisons of salt brands.

The thread started on 4/29 on what saltwater mix has many thoughts on the subject. Just look down the thread line.

I recently switched to Oceanic because of the high calcium and magnesium. Very happy with the results and don't have to add anything to the water for changes.

I am using Reef salt from SeaChem. So far this stuff has been awesome for a reef tank. They have Marine Salt too, but the reef is great with all trace in it so you don't have to worry about that with regular water changes.
