HELP... BABIES!!

well, happen just to glance over at my tank, and seen what i thought was a guppy. I was really wondering how i could have possibly got a guppy in my tank, so i went to investigate. under a piece of decor i noticed that there were 4 tiny little chiclids. I immediately had a heart attack in surprise then realized that i needed to get them into a safer area. I had to disrupt my tank quite a bit but i got three of them out. Another one of my chiclids ran over and ate one while i was trying to catch them (i felt awful). i set up an old betta 1 gal tank for tonight but i dont know what to do! i need advice on what to do. I plan on going to petsmart tomorrow for supplies so just let me know what i need to get!! thanks.

it depends on the type but u might want to keep the mother with them, they tend to be good parents

As above^ Any chance they took off with it to protect it? Cichlids have been known to do that. Congratulations!

The fish that appeared to eat one was orange and since these 3 are blue i am doubting that he was protecting them.

they are kenyis.

based on my limited knowledge of cichlids, i would have to bet it is the 1st. the lack of color on the ventral and anal fins makes me think the 1st is female and 2nd male.

i would have to agree. i have since read that keyni males are orange so the 2nd one probably not the father and the first is probably the mother.



I am not wanting to take a risk and let these babies be eaten, so i think i am going to set up a nursery in the tank.

The fish in pic are safe with the parents. The one that appeared to eat the fish was protecting it. They are mouth brooders and they can keep quite a few in their mouth.
It is rare for fish to feed during the stress of a net in the tank.
The parents will not typically eat them except on accident during stressful moments.

I know the feeling. Last year I came home to about a hundred fry swimming around. I was shocked because I've never had babies all the years that we've have the cichlids. We ended taking as many as we could from the tank before the parents were stressed out to much by chancing everyone else away. Mine are a mix between a red devil and a midas cichlid. Since then when ever they lay eggs the rest of the fish now feast on caviar. Now I have to get rid of the babies. I would agree with everyone else that the top picture is probably the mother. well i probably just killed the mother and the babies...
i have a 150 gallon tank that is currently about 14 or 15 hours into the cycling process. and i put the 3 fry and the mother in there. the water parameters all seem under control and well with in the normal range but i am still nervous. if all goes well and they survive, and once they are big enough the 150gal will be the home of all my cichlids. wish me luck.

Use filter media from an established filter on the 150 and you shouldn't have any problems. One adult w/3 fry isn't much of a bioload.
