What do you all use, recommend and such?

Are canister filters better than hang-on types? Is there more to consider than GPH? I noticed some different brands with the same max GPH ratings have quite a variation of recommended tanks-size.

Is there something in particular that one is supposed to do with/to flourite to keep the sediment from clouding up the tank?

Are there good bulbs for plants that aren't PURPLE? And, are there certain bulbs that will bring out the colours of certain fish better than others?

Is there a way to change/add substrate w/o disturbing the fish? I mean w/o taking them out either?

WHERE can I find good deco for my tall tank that would help maximise the space for Af. Cichlids?

How much deco/planting etc. is too much for: 150 tall, 75 and 55 long? I mean, is there a certain amount of 'empty' space required per fish, per gallon or something like that?

WHERE does everyone get those really awesome looking rocks with the holes in them--I mean the REAL ones? How heavy are they? How big of a rock could I put into a 150g tall tank w/o cracking the tank?

How does everyone keep their filters from clogging/jamming/burning out, etc, with sand for substrate. Can you use an under-substrate filter w/sand w/o the above happening? Is there a trick to it?

TIA! :)

I don't know a lot as I'm still starting but here's what I do know. Get the biggest cannister filter you can afford. On my 125 I have a FX5 rated at 400gals. The more GPH the more stock you can have because it will help remove more of the bad stuff.

I'm pretty sure the rock you are talking about is texas holey rock. You can find it on ebay. If it is white with a bunch of little holes then its texas.

I have a mix of flourite black and flourite sand in my tank and have had no problems so far (only set up like that for a week though). I keep my filter intake about 5-6 inches off the bottom.

The purple bulbs are generally not reccomended for FW, I've actually been told it would cause an algae bloom. That said I have been running of T5 VHO setup for over a month with 2 of them being actinic (purple) and no problems.
