Most sources say the chainlink can get up to 2 feet long (over 3 feet in the wild) and recommend 125 gallons for an adult.

That being said, I've also seen people put a chainlink eel in a 20 gallon tank and it faired ok. Not that I would recommend doing it.

Having a small one in a 55 gallon for a few years, but planning on taking it back to the fish store, giving it away to someone with a bigger tank, or upgrading should be a part of your plan.

That being said, what would I keep with an eel?

One of the dwarf lion fish species would be good. A fu man chu would be my pick. A big maroon or tomato clown maybe. as long as it's too big for the eel, but you might have problems even then. if you had more space, a panther grouper, but they get real big. A smaller puffer would probably work, though I can't think of a species of the top of my head. Again, room being your problem, but most tangs would be fine with an eel.

Also, eels need a tight fiting lid on the tank. They can get out of a tank with no problems at all.

also, you should pick up this book. you can answer a lot of these questions yourself with this.

You know you can always try this, but I have learned a lot by doing something like this adding too many fish together and they don't live very long. So you just waste your money plus you kill lots of fish. A 55 gal tank is really too small and putting these fish together is only going to cost you more in the long run. I know it would look nice with a snowflake and a lion together but it wouldn't last long. One thing you got to realize is when you buy these fish at your LFS they put these together for a short time, you plan on, or hope to keep them for a lot longer.

I second that. I use that as my primary SW source for anything besides Clownfishes and Seahorses. (I have books that concentrate on those three genera.) (There are two genera of Clownfish--Premnas and Ampiphron--that's why I said three genera when only naming two groups of fish.)

I wouldn't suggest a puffer with an eel due to their fin nipping nature (the tip of an Eels tail is just irristable for fin nipppers). Plus the only puffer that would fit in a 55 is any in the species Canthigaster and they are the most likely to fin nip of any of the puffs. I would say a tank devouted to lionfish and an eel would be extremely boring. Depending on the lion most hide behind rocks all day and eels hide in crevices of rocks with only their heads poking out. I would go with the eel, a clown of some sort (my favs are the Clarkii's) and a pygmy angel and call it a day. Wait at least 4 months (preferably 6) before adding the angel. A very good place to get info is www.wetwebmedia.com and a good place to buy fish online is www.liveaquaria.com Hope this helps.

A pygmy angel would be cool. I was thinking about mentioning a Bi-Color Angel or Coral Beauty, but I thought Hammer was wanting mostly a predator tank???

Also, I forgot to mention, but others have indirectly implied. The success of an eel or lion really depends on having a good deal of Live Rock. Lions love to hide under ledges and eels keep 90% of their bodies hidden in live rock all day long.

ok thanks for all the info..all my life i have been into the predator tank, starting from when i was younger with the freshwater tanks, i always had oscars or dempseys..it wouldnt bother me if i could only have an eel and one or 2 more fish in my tank..i never been a real community fish tank lover....so could an eel and a dwarf lion and maybe something else small live in the 55gal..and i am going to get a goos amount of LR....what is the best idea for substrate? i heard eels should have sand cause CC iritates their bellys.

Agree partially with Mono
I have a 50 g with a snowflake and a dwarf fuzzy.Leo sleeps all day.Eel stays in the rocks.
This is compenstated for at feeding time.
My eel will grab the raw shrimp and I can pull him out of the water about six inches. He does his figure eight ribbon maneuver and snaps the shrimp right out of my fingers.
My vote is for a dwarf fuzzy and a snowflake.
I love mine.
You can also look into scorpion fish, leaf fish in particular.
They don't need alot of room and are very, very cool specimens.
